It used to be, some time ago… that going on the Great Hunt meant something different than it seems to mean today. At least, in my particular instance. In my instance it’s something far less glamorous.
No, I’m not going off to slay an elk, providing food aplenty for my tribe. If only that were the case. Instead I’m talking about that Great JOB Hunt. It’s far less fun, and if you’re doing it right, hopefully their won’t be a bloody mess to clean up. Unless of course you happen to work as a butcher, or at a meat processing plant. I’m not really interested in work of that sort.
I miss the old school days of job hunting. Things were far simpler then, you could walk in to a place, pick up an application, fill it out and return it, get interviewed and then get hired on the spot. There isn’t a great deal of opportunities like that available anymore. Most every employer these days, is going to put you through at least two interviews, typically one on the phone and then an in-person interview. Then, if you happened to make it through their interview process, you’ll be required to submit to a background check and drug screening. All these things take precious, precious, time. Which, if you’re not constantly looking for new work, could lead to significant down time in the case of a person who is laid off or fired. This can be tough in this living paycheck-to-paycheck world.
And let’s not forget about the new way we job search. The web. While it provides a great many resources, I’ve come to discover that a great many of the job search websites aren’t really interested at all in helping you find work, but rather are more interested in selling your personal information and spamming your email. Even in cases of sites like indeed.com… which is constantly buggy… malicious users of the site have found ways to funnel you to outside sources to steal your information.
So, how exactly is one supposed to navigate this new world of job hunting? The only answer I can come up with, is: carefully. Pay attention when clicking links, and make sure to read everything. Always be cautious.
And me… I guess I’ll just keep on looking. Carefully.
