It’s been a long while since I wrote much of anything. A shame really… I enjoy doing it. Writing is one of those things that has always kind flowed naturally for me. However, I found myself lost in many other renewed hobbies.
When I was younger I used to enjoy playing D&D (and would probably still play today with the right group of people). One of the biggest attractions to the game were the various different dice, and the varieties of colors you could find them in. The free form campaigns, filled with who-knows-what kind of adventure around every corner. But mostly, for me, it was the lead and pewter miniatures.
The miniatures sprung my imagination to life. Often times I would find myself making new characters or NPC’s to play in my next D&D campaign. It was such great fun.
Then, one day, at larger hack’n’slash campaign that a guy ran at our local library… I saw an older player that had all sorts of painted miniatures. Up until that point I guess I had never even thought about painting my little guys, even though they were explicitly created with that intention in mind. I guess as kids, it’s strange the little things that we miss, and how beguiling they can be when we finally uncover them.
After that, I set out to paint me some mini’s. I was so horrible back then, but I do wish had them all now. It would be great to see what time and patience has changed. Personally, I think I do quite well… at least good enough for my liking. It’s been a lot of fun painting these new miniatures. They’re made of plastic these days. Probably a good thing in the long run. I feel like the details are more crisp on these new plastic models.
In addition to all that, I found a guy I’ve been watching on YouTube, Black Magic Crafts, and he creates some of the coolest miniature terrains, and buildings, but best of all shares his craft with the world so others can learn. I personally have found myself very taken with it, and have started making my own simple modular wood/stone tile set. It will make excellent terrain to setup some of my miniatures on. Or maybe if I’m lucky… I’ll find a few people to play D&D with… either way… it’s been a fun journey.
